Call to Freedom

The problem

It survives in the dark.

Human trafficking is the trade of human beings for forced labor or commercial sex. It reaches every corner of the globe, and it reaches into South Dakota: interstate corridors, hotels, farms, plants, apartment buildings, and the phones in our children's hands.

It is estimated that less than 1% of victims are ever identified. The rest are never counted, never named, never found. Many return to "the life" (the streets), end up in jail or prison, or simply disappear, not because they want that, but because there is a lack of specialized long-term care for survivors.

That is the part that keeps us up at night. Not that people cannot get out. That they get out, and find nothing waiting.

So we built something to be waiting. As the only nonprofit in South Dakota solely dedicated to providing specialized services for trafficking survivors, as well as public education and service professional training, Call to Freedom responds to the unmet needs of our most vulnerable.

Our solution

We don't do it alone

We are thankful for our partnerships with local business leaders, law enforcement, legislators, and individuals and families who make it possible for us to fight human trafficking at every level.

Those that we have served, it has been amazing to watch them evolve into a new identity. And if we were not here, I am not sure who would be helping, specializing in offering services for human trafficking.

Give

Call to Freedom relies on the support of YOU, our community.

Our phone rings. It has never been a question of whether we will answer. It is whether there will be a bed, a ride, a coat, and an advocate ready when we do. That part is decided long before the call comes, by people like you.

For the community, believing this is happening, giving it a voice, and being behind the cause really gives momentum and enables change. It also gives encouragement to the survivor that people do believe them and what has happened to them.

Your gift helps Call to Freedom provide lifesaving support to those impacted by human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Funds raised provide safety, basic needs, a supportive housing site, medical assistance, transportation, and other specialized services for those most in need.

Freedom is not a single moment. It is a road, walked one honest week at a time. Your gift is what keeps someone on it.

Call to Freedom is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. EIN 47-5469817. Gifts are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Review our Form 990 or call 605-799-6153 to discuss a gift.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Does human trafficking really happen in South Dakota?

Yes. Trafficking has been reported in all fifty states, and Call to Freedom has served over 1,500 survivors of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, ages 2 to 70. It happens along interstate corridors, in hotels and worksites, in homes, and online.

Who does Call to Freedom serve?

Anyone impacted by human trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation, regardless of gender, age, race, immigration status, or background. We serve children and youth ages 0 to 24 as well as adults. Men and boys are vulnerable to both sex and labor trafficking, and our services are inclusive.

Do I have to talk to police to get help?

No. Our services are voluntary and survivor-led. You do not have to file a report, press charges, or testify to receive help. You decide what happens next, and you can change your mind.

How much of my donation reaches survivors?

We publish an annual report and our IRS Form 990 so donors can see exactly how funds are used. If you want to talk through a specific gift, restricted funding, or a legacy gift, call 605-799-6153.

How do I refer someone?

Call the survivor support line at 605-759-3565. Law enforcement, hospitals, schools, shelters, employers, and family members all refer to us. You do not need to be certain that trafficking is occurring in order to call.

Will you join the call?

Someone will call our line this week carrying almost nothing. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which is fully funded by the generosity of people like you, and what she finds waiting is decided by the people who answered this before she ever dialed.
