Call to Freedom

About Call to Freedom

Call to Freedom brings hope and wholeness to all individuals impacted by sex and labor trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, by navigating a healing path through our Continuum of Care Model.

Our mission

Our vision

To ensure every person has the right to live with freedom, dignity, and respect.

Our statement of faith

We model Christ in our approach to restore wholeness to those impacted by sex and labor trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

Our values

Four commitments, and what each one costs us.

These are not decoration. Each one rules out something we could otherwise do, which is the only reason a value is worth writing down.

  • Dignity

We value the individuals we serve and accept them where they are on their healing journey. We demonstrate respect and empathy through validation, listening, and providing support.

  • Person-centered

We focus on the needs of the individuals we serve by ensuring they receive the services, being flexible, and honoring them.

  • Empowerment

We empower individuals and communities to prevent trafficking and exploitation through education and safety strategies, and we empower those we serve to create and achieve personal goals.

  • Integrity

We empower our team members to use a care team approach with clients, with each other, and with partners.

Who we are

An independent nonprofit, based in South Dakota.

Call to Freedom is not a subsidiary of a national parent organization. We are an independent nonprofit organization based in South Dakota, led by President and CEO Becky Rasmussen and governed by a volunteer board of directors. Read how Becky started it, or see who we are hiring.

Our team is nearly thirty people, with backgrounds in social work, juvenile justice, addiction recovery and crisis intervention. We also lead the East River Human Trafficking Task Force, which champions legislative reforms to secure justice for survivors and improve state accountability.

Call to Freedom has reached 61 of South Dakota's 66 counties, and all nine tribal reservations, with services, training and support.

Who we serve

Anyone impacted,
wherever they are from.

While we are based in South Dakota and the vast majority of our clients are from the state, we serve survivors of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation regardless of their state or country of origin.

Call to Freedom receives funding from the federal and state governments, private foundations, corporate contributions and partnerships, and local community giving.

Those that we have served, it has been amazing to watch them evolve into a new identity. And if we were not here, I am not sure who would be helping, specializing in offering services for human trafficking.

Why I am here

One of the first things the Lord said to me was, “Unite a community.” At the time I had no idea what that meant. What I came to realize is that people did want to be part of the solution, they simply had no tangible way to get involved. So we find creative ways for people to bring their own gifts and passions to this mission.

Why I am here

When I learned the extent of the violence happening in the place I called home, I had a moment of perfect clarity where I knew I was called to do something about it. Every human being has the right to be treated with dignity and to live free from violence. Here I get to spend every day building a world I believe in.

Why I am here

I believe all individuals deserve freedom and respect. What I love about Call to Freedom is that we walk alongside those in need and support them in every area of their journey, for as long as they need us.

Why I am here

It still amazes me how many people do not realize trafficking and sexual exploitation exist in South Dakota and in the Sioux Falls area. My work is to bring that into the open, and to tell the story of how we meet people where they are and, in many cases, help them reclaim their lives.

Why I am here

Wholeness comes from every agency and partner we coordinate with. Together we can bring balance to what someone needs. And everyone has needs and wants, so much of the work is helping clients learn to advocate for themselves and get those met.

Why I am here

They have been through the worst thing that has ever happened to them, and then you get to show them what life can actually look like. I tell clients all the time that I do not have a perfect life and I am not a model for one. But I am a mom. I am a partner to someone. I can be an example of what that looks like.

You cannot go wrong with helping people heal. If there is any way we can bring more love and more joy into that healing, that is something I want to be part of.

Why I am here

Call to Freedom supports survivors through a holistic continuum of care built for complex healing. Our values put dignity, respect, and empathy first for every person we serve, and the model itself is shaped by survivors' input.

Ashley staff-10 · confirm Ashley Spirituality and Mentor Coordinator
Why I am here

Spirituality can be an important part of healing. As survivors walk through that process it is vital to be healthy in spirit, soul, and body. Spirituality can offer hope, a sense of purpose, and community, and connecting a survivor with a mentor can be just as important to the journey.

Why I am here

I had a calling to help and to serve. Eventually I shared my own past at a Call to Freedom breakfast, to bring hope to other victims and to show that human trafficking does not know borders. My story is here to help others. It is not about me. It is about what I can do to shed light on the darkness. The continuum of care exists because victims need far more than most people understand, and because a person has to be looked at as a whole.

Raena staff-12 · confirm Raena Community Engagement Coordinator
